About Me

Snowdon climb with son

I'm a man in my 40s trying to undo a lifetime of, let's say, sub-optimal lifestyle choices.

I'm an Englishman with Scottish and Irish heritage.

I have been alcohol free since February of 2023, and at the moment, I can't see myself going back to it.

Weight

I have always struggled with maintaining a healthy weight.

I do associate quite a lot of that with drinking alcohol. Drinking booze usually leads to bad food choices; of course, the calories in booze itself are significant.

So a large part of what motivates me to remain drink-free is the hope of achieving a 'healthy weight' one day.

I've lost over 3 stone since dropping alcohol, and there is no doubt it helps.

Career

I'm now an office-dwelling web developer. Until I was 30, I was in retail.

Why is this significant?

Well, for the simple reason that when I started working in the office environment, I probably reduced my step-count by some 10,000 steps a day.

I made no adjustment to my lifestyle and diet, and subsequently put 5 stone of weight on pretty quickly, over a 2 or 3-year period, approximately.

It sounds stupid, but it is easily done. I don't beat myself up about it, but I do recognise that is where I went wrong.

So please, learn from my mistake!

Am or was I an alcoholic?

No, I don't think that I was. I think I teetered close in my student days, but I never had to drink. For me, it was a choice.

When I started, I struggled not to binge drink.

This blog is not about me trying to portray myself as a recovering alcoholic; it's simply me trying to portray the health benefits I feel from giving up the weekend excessive boozing.
